Tony Thaxton [Twitter] is the former (and long-time) drummer of the rock group Motion City Soundtrack.  He also hosts the podcast Feliz Navipod (hear Caleb on there).  After eleven years touring the world, Tony broke down.  Despite living his dream (and perhaps yours), he quit the band in order to stay in one place.

In this class we talk about:

  • Being a touring musician for eleven years.
  • His first band in high school.
  • Playing house shows at 18.
  • Finding out how much he wanted this career.
  • Going to new countries to perform.
  • Joining Motion City Soundtrack at the age of 24.
  • Immediately recording with a real producer after joining Motion City Soundtrack.
  • Still not being able to pay his rent for a while.
  • Not moving out of his parent’s house until 2007.
  • Touring in music and not making a ton of money for the first couple of years.
  • Not getting too carried away with partying and excess.
  • Doing what he wants to do for a living even if the money wasn’t always there.
  • Success without having radio hits.
  • Growing a fanbase.
  • Playing close to 300 shows in one year.
  • Living out of just one suitcase.
  • Not being the band that was all about picking up women.
  • Not being able to sleep a lot.
  • Taking turns with his band mates driving on early tours.
  • Graduating from vans to tour buses.
  • Not always being able to see the sights.
  • Eating at a Hard Rock Café in Dublin by himself.
  • Feeling like a spoiled brat.
  • Being good at not fighting with his other band mates.
  • Being in long distance relationships.
  • Playing in 19 countries.
  • Touring starting to wear him down.
  • Being use to saying goodbye to people.
  • Having to shut his emotions off and, being too good at it.
  • Coming home and not wanting to leave again.
  • Not knowing how to cope with depression.
  • Realizing that he needed to stop touring.
  • Not knowing what to do once he left the band.
  •  Having a nervous breakdown.
